WHO klasifikace poskytuje rámec pro jejich kategorizaci a grading. Nejčastějšími primárními extra‑axiálními nádory jsou meningiomy, vyházející z arachnotelu. Mezi vzácnější nádory se vztahem k mozkovým plenám lze zařadit solitární fibrózní tumor a melanocytární tumory plen. Mezi nádory kraniálních a paraspinálních nervů dominují schwannomy a neurofibromy. Vzácnějšími patologickými jednotkami jsou spinální hemangioblastomy a CENETy. Znalost jednotlivých extra‑axiálních tumorů je klíčová pro poskytnutí optimální péče pacientům.
