Steele (1934–2022) a nakonec spoluautorizoval přehledný článek, který hypotézu označil za jedinou správnou (Menšíková et al., 2023). Začátkem roku 2022 při přípravě tohoto článku v korespondenci se spoluautory připustil (na přímou výzvu Petera Spencera) to, že důkazů o environmentálním původu ALS/PDC je již příliš mnoho a že chronická intoxikace BMAA a MAM u domorodců s (patrně) genetickou susceptibilitou může být tím skutečným důvodem manifestace onemocnění. Praktické vymizení nových případů ALS/PDC potom vysvětlil importem potravin z pevniny, které vytlačily tradiční jídla včetně cykasových tortill. John Steele zemřel na Bali 21. května 2022. Přál si, aby jeho děti rozprášily jeho popel do moře v blízkosti Candidase na jihovýchodním cípu ostrova. Poděkování Autoři děkují Mgr.
