Váľnym problémom súčasnej neurológie je problém tzv. degeneratívnych ochorení nervového systému. Existujú rozporné názory mnohých renomovaných odborníkov a neurologických ąkôl, vznikajú tendencie o ich vynechávaní ako samostatnej kapitoly nervových ochorení. Vznikajú tým i rôzne pokusy o ich klasifikáciu na základe morfologických, klinických alebo iných princípov. Jeden z ich eponymov -systémové ochorenia a atrofie nervového systému- evokuje u niektorých autorov i moľnos» ich klasifikácie na základe neurofyziologických kritérií integračných, aferentných a eferentných systémov a s nimi asociovaných klinických jednotiek.
