Problematika "postpoliomyelitického syndromu"

Pozdní následky poliomyelitidy jsou souborem obtíží, které vedou u jedinců po kdysi prodělané poliomyelitidě, k horšení jejich dosud stabilizovaného zdravotního stavu. Objevuje se a narůstá u nich celá řada různých obtíží s převahou příznaků buď myo­skeletárních nebo neuromuskulárních. Mezi hlavní diagnostická kritéria vymezující tzv. postpoliomyelitický syndrom patří: poliomyelitida v anaméze, částečné znovuobnovení poškozených motorických funkcí, minimálně 15 let trvající stabilizace zdravotního stavu, postupný pokles svalové síly a celkové výkonnosti. Jednoznačné vysvětlení pro tyto prakticky nové progredující neuromuskulární symptomy se dosud nepodařilo nalézt, významný podíl nepochybně má chronické přetěžování motorických axonů, ale nelze vyloučit ani možnost zánětlivého autoimunního procesu.
