Vztah mezi psychózami a epilepsiemi přitahuje zaslouženou pozornost neurologů a psychiatrů již od poloviny 19. století, kdy byl poprvé konstatován zvýšený výskyt psychotických epizod u institucionalizovaných epileptických pacientů (5, 7, 8, 14). Popis tohoto vztahu prošel dramatickým vývojem od von Medunou navrženého biologického antagonismu mezi schizofrenními a epileptickými symptomy (11) až k hypotéze přímé vazby mezi oběma patologiemi jako důsledku společného postižení struktur především temporálního laloku (18). V důsledku existence širokého spektra psychotických symptomů u mnohdy zásadně odlišných epileptických syndromů však stěží můžeme očekávat nalezení jediného společného jmenovatele pro jejich vznik, či dokonce odhalení jednotného patofyziologického podkladu epilepsie a psychózy jako takové.
