Akútne infekcie centrálneho nervového systému (CNS) sú závažným medicínskym problémom, ktorý vyžaduje rýchly diagnostický a terapeutický zásah. Rozoznávame niekoľko klinických jednotiek, z ktorých najdôležitejšie sú bakteriálna meningitída, vírusová encefalitída a mozgový absces. Najdôležitejšou diagnostickou metódou je lumbálna punkcia, ktorej výsledok ukazuje, ktorým smerom sa má uberať ďalší hlavne terapeutický postup. Pri bakteriálnych infekciách centrálného nervového systému (CNS) nečakáme na kultiváciu mikroorganizmu, ktorý ich spôsobil, ale liečbu začíname empiricky a modifikujeme podľa výsledkov antibiotickej citlivosti.
