Diagnostika a léčba dětské epilepsie se vyznačuje specifickými rysy, které jsou podmíněny základními charakteristikami dětského vývoje. Jedná se jak o zvýšení rizika výskytu záchvatů i epileptogeneze v kritických obdobích, tak o vyšší náchylnost k dlouhodobému sekundárnímu poškození mozku a tím i psychomotorického vývoje dítěte. Z tohoto hlediska je nezbytná velmi pečlivá diferenciální diagnostika prvního záchvatu, správné syndromologické zařazení a uvážlivé rozhodnutí o charakteru léčebného postupu.
