Pojem emoce se vztahuje k subjektivnímu pocitovému stavu, který je osobním zážitkem. Od počátku 20. století se většina biologických výzkumů soustředila na hypotalamus jako na základní oblast mozku, pokud se jedná o vytváření a ovládání emocí. Z hlediska anatomie za základní pro vznik emočních fenoménů byly považovány limbický systém a přední temporální a spodní frontální kortex. Současná pozorování však stanovila, že zážitkové fenomény se objevují pouze, když je elektrická stimulace temporálního a frontálního kortexu rozšířena do amygdaly a hippokampu. Kognitivní rozpracování jsou pravděpodobně hlavní funkcí asociačních neokortexů, které se nacházejí ve frontálním, temporálním a okcipitálním mozkovém laloku. Prefrontální kortex je spojen s behaviorálními funkcemi. Poškození týkající se frontálních oblastí ústí v poruchy chování, které se dotýkají kontroly jednání a sebeuvědomění, způsobují narušení společenského chování či empatie.
