Hereditary cerebellar ataxias are rare causes of adult balance disorders. In this paper, we summarize basic information about this
heterogeneous group of diseases, with an emphasis on clinical diagnosis and with a particular focus on identifying treatable causes.

Keywords: hereditary ataxias, spinocerebelar ataxias, dominant ataxias, recessive ataxias, metabolic ataxias, mitochondrialataxias, genetics of ataxia
